Kara Folkeringa​

Hi! I’m Kara. I’m an MLIS student at the University of Alberta. I spend a lot of time offline (I read a lot), and as such I don’t intentionally engage with memes, but I am realizing they are a part of my day-to-day life whether I choose it or not, they’re everywhere! I do manage the Instagram page for my workplace (Marsh Historical Collection), and create reels for it, so I have been a meme creator in that context. I found it incredibly interesting to learn more about memes and the ways they can be used, I hope you enjoy reading about them as well!

Tessa McDougall​

I’m Tessa (she/her) and I’m nearly halfway through my Master of Library and Information Studies degree at the University of Alberta. As a child of the early 90s, I distinctly remember life Before The Internet and I grew up alongside the development of the World Wide Web. I love the internet and spend entirely too much time on it, using it for research, hobbies, connecting with friends, and as a way to express my creativity. My earliest memories of the internet date back to being a curious 11- or 12-year-old with no digital literacy skills and parents who knew less about the internet than I did. My preteen years were characterized by learning how to download entire albums and movies from Limewire using dial-up internet, getting AOL CDs in the mail for free internet trials, interacting with bots on MSN Messenger, and learning to use VPNs and proxy servers to download ~ exclusive ~ content for my digital fashion avatar. I viewed, interacted with, and participated in the creation of memes as a preteen and a teen before knowing or understanding what a meme is.

Courtenay ADams​

I’m Courtenay and I’m close to the halfway mark of my MLIS journey at the University of Alberta. I’ve spent too much time on the internet over the years and started making Sailor Moon webpages when I was a preteen back in the late 90s (#eldermillennial). I continue to enjoy web creation both personally and professionally (but mostly professionally at this point because a girl’s gotta make bank). With a spouse that also works in technology, meme sharing and technology debates are regular parts of my day, for better or worse.

Anneliese Eber​

Hi everyone! My name is Anneliese and I’m a Master of Library and Information Studies student at the University of Alberta. I’m someone who spends a lot of time on the internet perusing memes, sharing memes, and engaging with content on the web. I can’t remember the last day where I didn’t engage with at least some form of meme on the internet, it’s a core part of who I am as someone who grew up during the rise of modern internet memes. I have a passion for teaching digital literacy and connecting people with information in many different formats, including memes.
