LIS 530: Technology, Information, and Society

Multimemia Studies

We are four MLIS students at the University of Alberta studying memes for the lulz and for the course requirements (but mostly for the lulz). We also ask the following questions: What are memes and why are they significant? How are memes shared and who is sharing them? How are memes used in both positive and negative ways? Join us for the ride!

About The Contributors

This project was created to fulfill course requirements for LIS530: Technology, Information, and Society in the Fall semester of 2022. It was created by four online University of Alberta MLIS students fascinated by how information moves on the internet.

Dive into the World of Memes

In a modern era, we are inundated with information in many different forms. From written text to memes, information is everywhere. But how do users interact with and understand information? Multimemia Studies focuses on memes as a form of communication and information transmission. By exploring what memes are in their various different formats, this website discusses the good and bad side of memes. Memes can be used for good and create meaningful discussion; however, memes can also be used to disseminate misinformation and harmful ideologies. In today’s day and age, it is difficult, if not impossible, to avoid encountering information transmitted through memes. Memes are everywhere and infiltrate every corner of the internet and cover every imaginable topic. Learning what memes are, how they are transmitted, breaking them down, and understanding the bigger ideas that are often behind memes are integral aspects of digital literacy in 2022.
